Ongoing conflict in West Asia between the United States and Iran has hit the Indian household where it hurts the most: the kitchen. Latest data reveals that India’s LPG consumption fell by 13% in March as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues to choke global energy supply chains.

Impact of the Hormuz Blockade

India imports nearly 60% of its LPG requirements, with a vast majority passing through the Strait of Hormuz. With U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran leading to retaliatory blockades, shipping vessels are being diverted or stalled, leading to a significant shortage of cooking gas.

Government’s Response

To safeguard household supply, the Indian government has taken drastic steps:

  • Cutting supplies to commercial hotels and industries.
  • Prioritizing domestic connections (Ujjwala Yojna).
  • Seeking alternative routes through Vizhinjam Port as a maritime hub.
