Former U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at ending cashless bail practices and restricting flag burning, reigniting debates over criminal justice and constitutional freedoms. The order, announced at a press conference, has already sparked sharp reactions across political, legal, and activist circles.
According to Trump, the move is designed to strengthen law and order, addressing what he described as “loopholes” in the justice system. Cashless bail, which allows certain defendants to be released without paying money before trial, has been implemented in several states to reduce overcrowding in jails and prevent discrimination against low-income individuals. Critics of cashless bail, including Trump, argue that it leads to higher crime rates by allowing repeat offenders back on the streets too quickly.
In his remarks, Trump said, “Communities deserve safety, not revolving doors of criminals.” He emphasized that the order would push states to roll back cashless bail reforms, giving judges more discretion to require financial bonds for release.
The executive order also takes aim at flag burning, a controversial issue long debated in U.S. politics. Patriotic groups also welcomed stronger restrictions on flag burning, framing it as a matter of respect for national values.
Politically, the order is likely to intensify debates ahead of the upcoming election cycle. Trump has consistently framed himself as a defender of traditional values and law enforcement, and this order reinforces that image among his supporters. Opponents, however, see it as a calculated move to stir controversy and energize his political base.
