A devastating road accident on the Mathura stretch of the Yamuna Expressway claimed the lives of at least 15 people after a Gorakhpur-to-Delhi bus collided with multiple vehicles early Sunday morning. The massive crash involved eight buses and three cars, triggering chaos on one of North India’s busiest highways.
According to police officials, the accident occurred during the early hours when visibility was low due to mist and possible overspeeding. The bus traveling from Gorakhpur to Delhi reportedly lost control and rammed into vehicles ahead, causing a chain reaction collision. Several buses following closely were unable to stop in time, leading to a pile-up that stretched across multiple lanes.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving distress calls. Rescue teams from local administration, police, and ambulances worked for hours to pull victims from mangled vehicles. Many passengers were trapped inside buses, requiring heavy machinery to cut through damaged frames.
Authorities confirmed that 15 people died on the spot, while more than 25 others were injured, some critically. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals in Mathura and Agra, where doctors said several remain under observation. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as some victims are in serious condition.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic and devastation. “There were screams everywhere. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced financial compensation for the deceased and injured. District officials have been instructed to ensure proper medical care and support for affected families.
The Yamuna Expressway has witnessed several major accidents in recent years, raising renewed concerns about road safety, speed monitoring, and emergency preparedness. Experts continue to stress the need for stricter enforcement of speed limits, better night-time visibility measures, and improved driver awareness.
